a sweet way to get more veggies [Jun. 17th, 2009|02:51 pm]
[mood | pleased]

I love Alton Brown. He seriously rocks. There was a recent episode about hiding veggies in food (should've been on how to hide parsnips in your food, but I digress.) So I tried this recipe with a little variation with what I had on hand.
My changes
- left the skins on the pears and parsnips. There's nutrition in skins and who can tell once it's all pureed?
- used cinnamon and nutmeg instead of clove and cardamon. It's what I had.
- used Log Cabin pancake syrup instead of pure maple. Again, what I had on hand.
- no lemon juice, didn't have any. Added water instead.
- just realized I didn't add any salt. Don't think it needed it anyway.
- cooked in the oven on 400 for something like 45 minutes. Tightly covered with foil so the moisture wouldn't escape. We don't use microwaves.
The result is a sauce that tastes like a mild apple sauce. Nice and lightly sweet. Smells like fall but the spices aren't strong in the overall flavor. Seriously, without being told that the parsnips are in there, you wouldn't know. So at the very least I have something for William to eat. Haven't tried it on the other 2 yet. We shall see. Should be fine though. I'm very pleased with myself.

you know it's too humid when... [Jun. 12th, 2009|04:34 pm]
[mood | pleased]

the diapers you put outside to dry aren't dry yet, 6+ hours later (on a normal summer day they can be dry in 2). On a positive note I have discovered last.fm which is a lovely music website. Plug in an artist or style you like and you get yourself a "radio station" of similar style music. My new friend (not best friend, nothing will replace ravelry at this point). Through last.fm I have discovered Wicked Tinkers. Drums and bagpipes and gloriousness. Hee!

baby smiles and dying roses [Jun. 9th, 2009|09:51 am]
[mood | tired]

I think I'll reverse that actually. At least one, if not two of our rose bushes have rose rosette apparently. It's some sort of microscopic mite virus thing that kills the plant. So I guess we need to either tear out the bush now (probably the better option because it spreads easily) or wait until it's totally dead and then do it. But starting last year we noticed something wasn't quite right. The flowers weren't the beautiful ones we'd had the first year, the petals were discolored and they never bloomed properly. The canes/stems/whatever haven't looked quite right and lots of leaves are red. Doing research I've discovered rose rosette. Sigh. On top of that the infected parts are covered in aphids. Where are the ladybugs when you need them? So far the pink bush seems alright. Whether it's resistant or it just hasn't spread yet we have yet to see. Oh well. On a positive unrelated note, morning baby smiles are one of the best things in the world. I mean, what is better than waking up, watching your baby sleep during a morning thunderstorm, and then watching him wake up and smile all sleepily. I feel bad that I missed out on this with Erik and Kiara, we didn't do the whole bedsharing thing with them. With Erik we had a futon so it just wasn't safe. With Kiara, Erik was still falling asleep in bed with us so it wasn't safe. Yes, I get disturbed during the night a lot more because I wake up pretty much every time he stirs. But then there's things like this morning. He woke up, smiled, sat up, and then plopped sideways onto my leg for a few minutes. Sat up again, looked around and plopped face first onto my leg for a few minutes. Sat up, looked around, and plopped himself into my arm with his head on my shoulder and snuggled for a while. It's just so sweet.

dancing thoughts [May. 21st, 2009|03:26 pm]
[mood | impressed]

Ever since [info]evlilvxn shared that belly dancing video it got me thinking about how much I miss it (I need more time and energy. and motivation.) Ran across this video (2 parts) on Ravelry (I'm starting to think after my kids, my world revolves around Ravelry). I think this is incredible and what I'd love to achieve.

Woo! [May. 19th, 2009|09:13 am]
[mood | jubilant]

And we have walking! He's been thinking about it for a few days. He realized he could do it on Saturday when we were at Jon's parents' house and he was using an old walking toy of Kiara's to putter around the house. He thought it was great. So he's been doing it at home with another toy. But today after I finished vacuuming he wanted to play with the vacuum. So I moved it back against something so it wouldn't tip when he leaned on it and instead of dropping down and crawling the couple feet to it he just walked. Woo!

sigh [May. 1st, 2009|11:15 am]
[mood | tired]

I'd forgotten how much I like grey rainy spring days. Although the humidity I could do without. I just love the smell. Was lovely walking Erik to school today. However in the excitement of waiting for the sorting and classes to be posted today I'd forgotten Beltane. Whoops. And Kiara's been running a fever since the night before last. And she's got a sore throat and can't talk. Poor baby. Topping it off, I've got a bit of a headache and can't tell if it's because I'm tired (master William hasn't been sleeping well, he keeps tossing and won't settle in and is keeping me up) or if I'm getting sick. Think it feels more like a tired headache. We shall see. Off to sanitize binkies and make lunch.

umm. Hmm. What kind of sound does a badger make? :wanders off to try and find out:
In all sincerity, I have been sorted into Hufflepuff house for the spring term of the Harry Potter Knitting/Crocheting House Cup. Woot! Classes start tomorrow. I've been holding off on new projects and it's been torture I tell you, torture.

Moulin Rouge was on the other night so of course I had to watch it. it hurts to watch it for various random reasons but I can't not watch it for some reason. although I've yet to actually see it from beginning to end in one sitting. must spend a little more time reading as Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is due back at the library soon and I don't know if I can renew a book borrowed through inter-library loan. baby needs dry diaper, 3 y/o needs snack, I need sleep. whee!

keep forgetting, book rec [Feb. 27th, 2009|12:49 pm]
if you want a fast, captivating, thought provoking, and scary/disturbing read, I highly recommend Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. i read it in a day easily. yes, it's YA fiction (i have a thing for YA fiction). but it really makes you think about things that could happen and if you could prepare yourself. i'm about to start the comanion novel (not a sequel as it's different characters experiencing the same major event in a different location) and there's a third in progress.
